tradition working for you

overheard yesterday afternoon:
B&G head into phone: "Well, sheriff, we've been parking there since 1874. When the car was invented, we painted lines for parking spots there and we've been parking cars there ever since."

  1. What's a B&G head!?

    Oh, like, Buildings and Grounds?

  2. This makes me laugh, and reminds me of the time I was on the phone with someone from the IRS who insisted that our church had never had an employer ID number. (I had the original form with our number on it in my hand at the time.)

She asked me if the church was a new one. I told her "Not exactly". She asked me "When was the church founded?" I said "1842." She then asked me, (I swear this is true!) "What day?"

I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe. She did not see how that was an absurd question to ask me.

  3. heehee!
We were founded in 1839, and that would have made an even better story, but we didn't get this building started until 1872. We still worship in the original sanctuary.
I have to wonder whether the neighbor who started this lined parking space dispute (which led to this call) knew what he was moving in next to?

  4. The "what day?" comment would make me want to say something snarky like, "I think it was a Tuesday."

  6. "When was your church founded?"

I wouldn't be able to keep myself from saying, "Pentecost."
